Draft Coach and RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM)

IMPORTANT - do not use Draft Coach in a file with RCM data, unless you have first backed it up and created a copy.

RCM is a streamlined version of RefWorks, embedded within Microsoft Word, that enables you to add citations and references as you write.

RCM and Draft Coach are Microsoft Word plug-ins, developed by different companies. Due to their nature, conflicts arise between these tools.

What can go wrong?

To generate the citations and reference lists, RCM inserts dynamic text boxes within your Word document. These maintain your citations and reference list entries synchronised with your RefWorks collection.

When Draft Coach runs, it transforms all content, including the dynamic text boxes, to plain text. Therefore, the RCM functionality for citations and references is lost.

If planning to use both RCM and Draft Coach we advise the following:

  • Regularly back-up and save copies of your work to avoid data loss
  • Use a copy of your file to run Draft Coach
  • Manually correct any issues identified by Draft Coach within the file with live RCM data.
