Unit 4: Common Problems and FAQs
References with Missing Information
Before deciding to reference a source that is missing information, you should first consider whether the missing information damages the source’s credibility.
For example, if you do not know who wrote or published a piece of information, can you be certain the information is reliable for use in academic work?
If you decide to reference the source, replace the missing information in your references with the following:
Missing info | Use |
---|---|
Author | You can sometimes use the publishing organisation as the author. Otherwise, move the document/article title (or URL if the source is a webpage) to the start of the citation/reference. |
Year of publication. | (no date) |
Place of publication | (no location) |
Publisher | (no publisher) |
Other missing info | (not known) |
