Unit 4: Common Problems and FAQs

Places of Publication

Certain references require you to state the place of publication. This is common for books but can also be requested for other types of references.

For books, the place of publication is usually stated on the title page, or the front matter (a page near the front containing bibliographic details). If using LibrarySearch to access books or eBooks, the place of publication is usually visible on the library record for the book.

Conventions

For places within the UK, use the town or city as the place of publication. Do not use the name of a country, state, shire, or county.

For places outside of the UK we must provide a little more information. We have a couple of simple conventions you should remember:

LOCATION RULE EXAMPLE
United Kingdom Just the city Edinburgh:
United States City, State Abbreviation Bethesda, MD:
Canada City, Province Abbreviation Calgary, AB:
Australia City, Territory Abbreviation Perth, WA:
Rest of the world City, Country Geneva, Switzerland:
