Cases (Scotland)

The following are examples of how to reference cases from Scottish Courts.

With Neutral Citations

From 2005, the main Scottish courts began using neutral citations, and these should be included where applicable:

Template (Footnote/Table of Cases):

case name | [year] | court | number, | year OR (year) | volume (if applicable) | report abbreviation | first page.

Examples:

Cherry v Advocate General [2019] CSIH 49, 2020 SC 37.

Centric Community Project Ltd Aberdeen City Council [2019] CSOH 76, 2019 SLT 1318.

Without Neutral Citations

For some older Scottish cases without neutral citations, include the court abbreviation in brackets at the end of the reference as below:

Template (Footnote/Table of Cases):

case name | [year] or (year) | volume (if applicable) | report abbreviation | first page | (court).

Examples:

Delikies Ltd v Scottish and Newcastle Plc [1878] 15 ScotLR 562 (CSIH).

Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] AC 562 (SC (HL)).
