OSCOLA Referencing
UK Statutory Instruments
The following are examples of how to reference UK Statutory Instruments (orders, regulations or rules). See the FAQs for general guidance on citing legislation.
Statutory Instruments
Cite a typical statutory instrument by its title, year and SI number.
Template (Footnote/Table of Legislation):
Title | Year | SI Number.
Examples:
Penalties for Disorderly Behaviour (Amendment of Minimum Age) Order 2004, SI 2004/3166.
Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations 1999, SI 1999/2083.
Statutory Instrument (Part)
When referring to a specific part of a statutory instrument (regulations/rules/articles), this should also be included in the footnote citation. The relevant abbreviations are as follows:
regulation/regulations | reg/regs |
rule/rules | r/rr |
article/articles | art/arts |
Template (Footnote/Table of Legislation):
Title | Year, | SI number | part number.
Example:
Eggs and Chicks (England) Regulations 2009, SI 2009/2163, reg 11.
Penalties for Disorderly Behaviour (Amendment of Minimum Age) Order 2004, SI 2004/3166. arts 3,4.
If citing a part of a statutory instrument, only include the first abbreviation. So, for paragraph 3 of regulation 11 of the Eggs and Chicks (England) Regulations 2009:
Example:
Eggs and Chicks (England) Regulations 2009, SI 2009/2163, reg 11(3).
Statutory Rules and Orders
Statutory Instruments used to be called statutory rules and orders. These should be cited by title, year and SR & O number:
Citing Rules of Court
There are specific conditions when specifically citing the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) and the preceding Rules of the Supreme Court (RSC) and County Court Rules (CCR). You do not need to include years or SI numbers in these instances, but ensure you do so for other rules of court. If pinpointing to a specific part of the CPR, do not use a comma before the pinpoint and do not use r and rr to denote rule and rules.
Examples:
CPR 7.
RSC Ord 24, r 14A.
CCR Ord 17, r 11.
Refer to CPR Practice Directions by number, according to the part or rule they supplement:
Examples:
6A PD 4.1.
7A PD 8.2.
