Cases (Northern Ireland)

The following are examples of how to reference cases from Northern Ireland.

With Neutral Citations

Northern Irish courts use neutral citations, and these should be referenced where applicable:

Template (Footnote/Table of Cases):

case name | [year] | court | number, | year OR (year) | volume (if applicable) | report abbreviation | first page.

Examples:

Wilson v Commissioner of Valuation [2009] NICA 30, [2010] NI 48.

Breslin v Murphy [2013] NICA 75, [2017] NI 1.

Without Neutral Citations

For older Northern Irish cases without neutral citations, include the court abbreviation in brackets at the end of the reference as below:

Template (Footnote/Table of Cases):

case name | [year] or (year) | volume | report abbreviation | first page | (court).

Examples:

Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary v A (Sergeant) [2000] NI 261 (NICA).

Donaldson v Eastern Health and Social Services Board [1997] NI 232 (NIQB).
