Unit 3: Managing references
Citation View Settings
You can change your RefWorks display settings to display your references in a chosen citation style.
We recommend this if you intend on using a specific referencing style, like RGU recommended versions of Harvard or Vancouver.
Access Citation View
- In RefWorks, click 'Normal view' from your display options near the top-right of the window.
- You can click 'Citation View' to activate the style displayed (usually the RGU recommended version of Cite Them Right Harvard).
- You can click the options (gear) icon on the Citation View option to change your citation settings further if you wish.
Change Citation View Settings
- Within the Citation view options, you can click the drop-down to select a citation style.
- You will notice a toggle for 'Highlight missing metadata'. Keep this option turned on to help with proofreading references in RefWorks, as it shows when and where information is missing.
- Clicking the 'Citation style' drop-down displays a search box, where you can search styles from within RefWorks.
- You can access recommended styles (created by RGU Library) from the 'Institutional styles' drop-down.
- Once you have finished making any changes, select 'Save' to activate Citation View.
Citation View in RefWorks
- With Citation view activated, RefWorks will attempt to display references in your chosen style.
- If you left 'Highlight missing metadata' turned on, missing information will be displayed for certain fields in your references. Please bear in mind that not every field needs to be filled in every reference. The example opposite displays a complete journal article reference with the 'Extra data', 'URL' and 'Retrieved' date empty, as they are not required. If you would like to add new information, you can click on these bubbles to open the referencing editor.
- You can return to Normal view or change your view settings by clicking 'Citation view' in your display settings and choosing the desired option.
