Tips for using RGU Recommended Referencing Styles
The following are some tips for getting the best out of the RGU recommended referencing styles in RefWorks.
Cite Them Right Harvard (RGU Recommended)
Turn on Citation View settings for your chosen style
You can find our guidance on the Citation View settings elsewhere in this guide. Choosing your intended style from the 'Institutional Styles' drop-down lets you see how your references look in a given style. This allows you to make any necessary edits before generating reference lists or citations.
Formatting article links in citation view
By default, both the DOI and URL/Access date options will be visible for journal article Ref Types in RefWorks with the RGU Recommended versions of Cite Them Right Harvard and Vancouver active. If your article has both a DOI and URL visible, make sure to retain only one of these (preferably the DOI). Remember that an access date is only used if your journal article requires a URL in the reference, otherwise leave it blank.
Examples
Template
RefWorks will not generate journal article editorials and anonymous articles with the publication title in the author field as in accordance with Cite Them Right style. For these instances, we recommend 1) adding the name of the journal in the author field, 2) generating the reference using ‘Create bibliography’, copy/paste into your document, then apply the italics manually in your word processor.
Example
Formatting problems for journal articles with no volume (issue) and include article numbers
You may experience problems when adding journal article references that omit both volume and issue numbers, and use article numbers. Generating a reference like this results in a blank space to appear in the reference. The only workaround for this is to generate the reference using the ‘Create Bibliography’ option in RefWorks, copy/paste the reference into your document, then remove the unnecessary spacing/punctuation manually in your word processor.
References affected by the Electronic Source checkbox:
If the ‘Electronic Source’ checkbox is selected/deselected within the reference editor, this may change the fields RefWorks uses for certain references. For example, it may make fields (such as URL and access date) appear that you can use if referencing a source accessed online. This is not available for all Ref Types (books and journal articles are not affected). The following Ref Types can be switched between a physical and electronic version in this way: Artwork, Audio, Computer Program, Dissertation/Thesis, Magazine Article, Map, Motion Picture, Newspaper Article, Report.
Books with more than three editors:
Currently, (ed) displays rather than (eds) when citing a book or book chapter that includes more than three editors. This is because RefWorks uses the number of author names displayed (in this case 1, followed by et al.) and mistakenly applies (ed). At present, the only fix is to generate a reference using ‘Create Bibliography’ in RefWorks and making the change manually in your document once pasted in.
Bill/resolution Ref Type not currently working:
Despite our best efforts, the Bill/Resolution template does not currently work for referencing Parliament Bills and other prospective legislation. We recommend formatting such references manually and consulting the relevant template for accurate formatting guidance.
Medium display glitch for non-electronic Audio Ref Type
When referencing a piece of physical audio media (CD, Vinyl, Cassette, etc.) bear in mind there is a formatting problem when adding the medium into a RefWorks reference. To get the medium to display properly, you must add the information in the ‘Medium’ field in the reference editor, but Citation View will display a ‘Volume’ field. If you click the ‘Volume’ button, you should not enter the Medium details in this field, but in the ‘Medium’ field instead.
RefWorks FAQs
We recommend you take the following steps to rule out a technical problem with your device:
- Clear your browsing data and cookies on your browser.
- Close and re-open your browser.
- Reopen RefWorks/RCM.
Other browser add-ons may interfere with how RefWorks behaves. Consider disabling any you do not use.
You may need to disable pop-up/ad-blockers for RefWorks to behave normally.
Refresh your browsing window. This should update the RefWorks display to include your most recent changes.
Bear in mind your RefWorks password does not change if you change your RGU systems password. Reset your RefWorks password and try logging in again – making sure you use your RGU email address to login.

Make sure to edit your references! Some information can be misplaced/omitted during the import process. In particular, watch out for references imported as the ‘Generic’ Ref Type, this should normally be changed to reflect the type of source you are trying to reference (Book, Journal Article, Webpage, etc.). You can use the Bulk Edit feature to quickly correct mistakes with many references at once.
Be careful when using RCM and Turnitin Draft Coach simultaneously. If you insert citations and references using RCM, then proceed to run Draft Coach, this will turn your RCM citations and references to plain text, making them uneditable in RCM. At present, there is no way to prevent this happening, so any loss of RCM functionality for references is permanent. We advise you take the following approaches if planning to use both of these programs:
- Finish inserting all of your citations and references before opening Draft Coach.
- Create backups of draft files for the purposes of running Draft Coach features as you write.
- Regularly backup and save copies of your work to avoid data loss.
Users are strongly advised to treat any third party software used for their work or studies with caution.
