Unit 3: Managing references
Generating References
You can use RefWorks to generate references based on the examples you have imported to, or created in, your RefWorks library.
Make sure you proofread or edit any references before following these steps to ensure you get the best possible results.
This page covers how to generate references within RefWorks itself. You can also insert citations and references using RefWorks Citation Manager.
Quick cite
- Clicking Quick cite allows you to generate both in-text (parenthetical) citations and reference list entries. Quick cite can be used to add bibliography entries for numbered citation styles (such as Vancouver and OSCOLA), but not in-text citations. For adding in-text citations using these styles, use RefWorks Citation Manager.
- Your first option is to change your citation style using the drop-down provided. Once you have the desired style, click 'Continue'.
- The next option involves selecting references to create in-text citations. You can select any references from your current folder. You can select individual references, or clusters of references, using the checkboxes in the list. You can copy/paste any citations to your own documents by clicking the Clipboard icon to the right of the citation window. Once you have finished inserting citations, you can proceed to the next screen by pressing 'Continue to bibliography'.
- In this final screen, you have the option of generating references based on any citations you selected in the previous window, or including every reference within your current folder by toggling 'include all'. Click 'Copy to Clipboard' and copy/paste the references into your document as desired.
Create bibliography
- The 'Create bibliography' option is the quickest for generating a reference list, but it does not produce in-text citations.
- Within this section, you can generate a reference list based on either any references you have selected in your current folder, or the entire contents of the folder. You can switch between these using options at the top of the screen.
- You can also switch your citation style using the drop-down menu if needed.
- Click 'Copy to Clipboard' to allow you to copy/paste the generated list into your own document.
