Unit 2: Adding References
From a RIS file
Sometimes it is necessary to export references from databases as a file, rather than using a direct export.
This happens most often in databases that do not have a direct export feature, or only support direct export for a certain number of references.
For this reason, importing references from a downloaded RIS file is often a useful way of adding a large number of references to RefWorks at once.
'Import References' menu
We recommend that you first navigate to the RefWorks folder you wish to upload references to.
- Select the Add (+) option from the toolbar above the folder name.
- Choose 'Other file types', located in the 'Import references from' section.
In the resulting screen, you have two options for uploading your RIS file. You can either click and drag your file from another window on your device, or click 'select file from your computer' to browse your device for the file.
After selecting the file, a series of options will open in a smaller 'Import References' window.
RefWorks will attempt to identify the file type you have uploaded. This works for most RIS files, but if for some reason an incorrect file type displays, you can change it by selecting 'Search for the format'.
You also have an option of selecting an import filter from a drop-down list. These filters correspond to certain databases. If you cannot find your chosen database in the list of options, select 'RIS format', as displayed on the screenshot above. Once you have made your choice, select 'Import' to proceed.
