Unit 4: Tools and Add-ons

Save to RefWorks

You can use 'Save to RefWorks' to add references from the open web, or any online sources that do not support direct or file export, to RefWorks.

Save to RefWorks works on most modern browsers (including MS Edge, Chrome and Firefox) and should work regardless of operating system.

You must have any ad blockers turned off and third-party cookies must be allowed in your browser for Save to RefWorks to function.

Install Save to RefWorks

  • Select the 'Tools' option within the RefWorks toolbar.
  • Click 'Install Save to RefWorks' on the following screen.
  • Click and drag the 'Save to RefWorks' button from the centre of the pop-up window to your browser's Favourites bar.
  • If successful, a 'Save to RefWorks' button should now be visible in your browser's favourites bar.

The Import Process

  • Navigate to a web source you wish to import to RefWorks (you can also do this for journal article pdfs you open in your browser). Click the 'Save to RefWorks' button you installed previously.
  • This should open the Save to RefWorks editor in a pop-up window on your browser. Save to RefWorks may not open on websites that run competing javascript. In such cases, creating references manually may be your only option.
  • provided Save to RefWorks opens, you can review the fields in the reference editor. RefWorks will attempt to populate these fields based on the page or file's metadata, but there may be errors or missing data you have to fix/add.
  • Once you have added any data you would like to at this stage, click 'Save to RefWorks'.
  • You will then be directed to a version of the RefWorks Import menu. You can specify a folder to add the reference to, then select 'Import'.
  • If successful, you will be directed to an import summary. You can choose to view the new reference in RefWorks, or close the sidebar. Please bear in mind that the import may fail if the host website interrupts the process. Unfortunately, creating a reference from scratch may be necessary in this situation.
